Indiana Dunes National Park - April 2021

This is the first trip we've taken since October 2019 and we picked a good one. Indiana Dunes National Park is an unexpected getaway that puts in you in a completely different world.
Having been to Indianapolis mayn times, I had a skewed view of what Indiana is actually like. The Dunes take you from Midwest to a scenery that looks like the East Coast or even much like the beaches of Destin, Florida. The dunes make these fantastic mounds with vegetation sprinkled all through the area as you take a mildly rigorous hike leading you over the dunes to the banks of Lake Michigan.
Once you crest the top of the dunes and see that beautiful blue lake, it's immense and breath taking with a wake that makes you feel you are at the ocean. The Great Lakes are truly awe inspiring and this view of Lake Michigan is much different than when you see it from the banks of Chicago. Amazingly enough on a clear day from the lookout at The Dunes you can actually see the Windy City from across Lake Michigan!
At a 4.5 hour drive from St. Louis is is completely worth the trip and their camping area has some of the best walk-in tent sites I have ever experienced. They also have electric sites for campers as well. This is on my list of cheap weekend getaways that you won't soon forget!
