Gregg Allman @ The Pageant
1.4.12 @ The Pageant
The 2012 concert season for me started out with having the opportunity to snap some images of a rock icon. Mr. Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers! Not only was he in attendance that evening, his son Devon opened the show which I found kind of cool. In looking back at these I remembered that this night taught me that concerts are not set up for photographers and as a photographer the true talent it capturing images when the setting is not ideal. I had only the first 3 songs as usual and Gregg sat behind the keys for each one. Also there was a row of mic stands about 6 wide, one after the other like little soldiers guarding the stage. Each mic stand was positioned right in front of the view of each band member. I had a lot of obstacles this night to shoot around but it's something you often have to deal with. I'm happy to have the challenge thrown at me on the 6th show I had ever shot at this point. So a word of advice to anyone venturing into concert photography, when you are given lemons make lemonade. You have to work with what you have and it won't always turn out the way you might have envisioned it, but as long as you walked away with something that is portfolio worthy that is a huge mark to hit. Even it the framing, lighting, and composure is not how you would have liked to capture a particular act you are covering always remember concert photography is a constant learning experience!
