The Black Angels @ Old Rock House
10.16.11 @ Old Rock House
This is the earliest club show I could find in the archives. I didn't have a media outlet to shoot for, I just bought a ticket and showed up with my camera. This was such a great learning experience, as every club show can be. In this type of concert setting you are not always dealing with "tour lighting". Sometimes it's a band just starting off and are living out of a van, hitting up city after city with nothing but themselves and their gear. The Black Angels was exactly that, an upcoming psychedelic-indie rock act from Austin, Texas whom would gain traction in 2011 slowly becoming a festival staple for Austin City Limits, Bonnarroo, Lollapalooza, and Coachella from 2011 - 2014.
This show is significant because I learned a lot, at the time I only had one lens in my arsenal and I realized quick that I needed a lens that would give me the ability to open the aperture and kick up the shutter speed as much as possible for a good exposure. You'll see a lot of hand blur and image blur in these pics but that is normal when shooting wider apertures and low shutter speeds when trying to capture moving subjects.
This band is one of my favorite acts to this day and this evening I was just happy to finally see them live and walk away with a couple snapshots of a band I love. That's really what it's all about. Concert photography is the perfect marriage of fan boy meets artist/photographer. Everyone you see in a photo pit is a fan, it's what helps to feed the drive to succeed. This show just helped to stoke the fire, it wouldn't be until 2012 that Indie Image STL was born.
